November Roundtable Luncheon

The second roundtable luncheon of the year featured Brian Sullivan of Austin-based McElroy, Sullivan, & Miller, LLP. After receiving his degree from UT, Mr. Sullivan was the only Petroleum Engineer in the country to enter law school the year he began at the University of Texas School of Law. He began working as a Hearings Examiner for the Texas Railroad Commission straight out of law school. This opportunity gave Mr. Sullivan enormous responsibility as a beginning lawyer and provided him with valuable insight into litigating before the agency - a tool he continues to use. He highly recommended working for such agencies as the Railroad Commission or General Land Office for hands-on experience as a young attorney and as a way to immerse oneself in the oil, gas, and energy industry. Mr. Sullivan provided everyone in attendance with insight into a traditional oil and gas law practice in Texas and advice on how to succeed in our future careers.

Energy Law Career Panel & Reception

TJOGEL presented its annual Energy Law Career Panel to an audience of over 40 students this October. The panel consisted of energy law practitioners from large firms, small firms, in-house corporations, and government agencies. We were fortunate to have the following speakers:

  • Tim Gehl – Shell Oil
  • Jay Kelley – Vinson & Elkins
  • Polly McDonald – Texas Railroad Commission
  • J.J. McAnelly – Bracewell & Giuliani
  • Cynthia Redwine – Vinson & Elkins
  • Brent Stahl – Stahl, Bernal & Davies
The panel was moderated by our Editor-in-Chief, Becky Diffen, who asked the panelists questions about their background and experience in energy law. The panelists gave insight into their different types of practice, various clients, and diverse legal issues. They also offered advice on future energy law careers relating to the current economy and gave recommendations on helpful classes to the students. The career panel was followed by a reception for all in attendance to enjoy appetizers and meet the panelists. Then those on the panel were invited to join the TJOGEL Editorial Board for a dinner in honor of the TJOGEL Board of Advisors at the University of Texas Club.
